We welcomed Bintang from Indonesia as a guest and hosted a "Casual World Travel" event titled "Indonesia: Enjoying Coolness and Warmth During the Rainy Season."
We were introduced to various aspects of Indonesia, including its geography, climate, language, traditional clothing, and food culture.
We also learned plenty of interesting trivia! For instance, "Java Curry"—famous in Japan—actually takes its name from the Indonesian island of Java. However, spicy dishes like curry aren't actually very popular in the Java region itself... (laughs).
When it came to the introduction of "Batik"—Indonesia's traditional attire—everyone had the chance to try on the real thing!
Batik refers to fabric dyed using a wax-resist technique. You might think of it as the Indonesian equivalent of an Aloha shirt. Trying on the traditional clothing gave us a firsthand feel for how cool and comfortable it is to wear.
For the food segment, Bintang-san brought along an Indonesian treat called "Klepon"! Klepon is similar to Japanese dango (rice dumplings) and is filled with kuromitsu (dark sugar syrup). It’s a casual snack that can be enjoyed anytime, rather than being reserved only for special occasions. We all tasted it alongside some aromatic Indonesian tea, and there were plenty of exclamations of "Delicious!"
During the Q&A session, everyone was eager to ask questions about Indonesia! Although many languages are spoken across the country, we learned that Indonesian serves as the official language and is understood in every region. There were also plenty of other interesting questions—such as whether there are differences between the Indonesian and Monacan flags (which look very similar) and whether Indonesian men cook.
Thank you, Bintang-san and all the participants, for such a warm and enjoyable time!
